Fashion Accessories for Goodwood Revival 2024
Fashion Accessories for Goodwood Revival 2024
Goodwood Revival is so exciting but it can be overwhelming! We have got your guide to dressing here, but here is your guide to accessories for 2024!
1940s Fashion Accessories
In 1940, we still had a 'wartime' mentality, even with the war ending mid-decade. Make do and mend was still present through the 1950s
Hats
Hats were used to complement hair, rather than cover it up! Berets, pillbox hats and tilt hats were popular. Another option was turbans or snoods, which was an easy way to tie hair back ready for work!
However, for all things hats, we are not the experts - we highly recommend Isabella Josie Millinery
Snoods available:
Hair Nets are also available.
Flowers in hair also became popular - we have so many in store but some are available online:
Gloves
These were essential and due to the utilitarian style of dress, often were bright or detailed (but always matching) to add to the outfit! They could be lace, crochet or leather where available. However, they could also be wool which was functional and practical.
Unique Vintage gloves: also available in burgundy!
Handbags
These tended to be boxy with short handles. However, as women needed to carry more, they got bigger towards the end of the decade. Handbags were made out of fabric, wood or plastic as leather became harder to source for luxury items.
This Carrie bag is a popular 40s style - with the benefit of being designed today - with a carry handle and over-the-shoulder chain. Also available in orange.
Jewellery
Jewellery was bold to offset the style of clothing (and colours available). It was often made from wood, glass or plastic. Brooches were popular as they offered a touch of personality to otherwise functional outfits.
Scarves
Scarves were a versatile accessory; they could be tied in the hair, around the neck or used as a turban. They were ideal for adding a pop of colour.
Stockings
Stockings were popular but were hard to source (and cost 6 clothing ration tokens!)- women used to draw lines down the back of their legs to mimic stocking seams!
(if you are going to draw lines, make sure it is waterproof!)
Shoes
Women's shoes were functional and often were used for day and evening wear. Women's pumps with a low heel would take you from day to night time easily. Peep-toe shoes became popular. Women would have worn a version of Oxford shoes with a flatter heel than mens! Towards the end of the decade, wedges increased in popularity.
1950s Fashion Accessories
The 1950s were a strange era for clothing and fashion accessories. As mentioned in our other blog post (what to wear for Goodwood Revival 2024), the UK was slower to adapt to the fashions coming out of America and Paris, mainly due to rationing still having an impact, as well as the 'make-do and mend' culture which wouldn't just disappear overnight.
Hats
Hats were still popular during this decade and featured pillbox hats, wide-brimmed hats and berets. Whilst we have some berets in store, we recommend heading to the lovely Isabella Josie for all your millinery needs!
Gloves
Gloves were still worn, with short gloves for every day and long satin or silk gloves for evening events.
Bags
Bags were still relatively boxy, with a short handle to be held or worn on the forearm. However, they gradually grew as women needed to carry more things. We have lots of lovely handbags for this decade!
Evening clutch bags also started appearing, often highly beaded or embroidered.
Jewellery
Necklaces with a single or double strand of pearls were popular! (we have faux pearls in-store in various colours).
Clip-on earrings were popular (as ear piercing was very gradually becoming popular) often with buttons, or chandelier-style!
Brooches and pins remained popular, adding colour or personality to outfits!
Hair Flowers
These were popular through the 1940s. However, they were used in the 1950s to update hats or wear as corsages instead of brooches.
Scarves
Scarves also remained popular, with colourful additions being added easily to outfits; around wrists, in the hair or even on handbags!
Shoes
Stilleto heels, kitten heels and ballet flats were popular in the 1950s. We recommend ballet flats for Goodwood Revival due to the amount of walking, or some pumps!
Belts
These were a 'must have' fashion accessory, enabling the waist to be nipped in! This was all to do with the re-emerging feminine lines post-wartime.

Sunglasses
Sunglasses (and regular glasses) became increasingly decorative, with the cat-eye style becoming popular. Pop in and see our range of sunglasses!
1960s Fashion Accessories
As mentioned in our previous blog post, this was a varied era, with multiple trends emerging! We will try to cover a few different themes here!
As a reminder:
1) Jackie Kennedy-inspired look - boxy suits, sheath dresses and accessories
2) Swinging London - menswear trends, mini dresses, creative fabrics (PVC/metallics)
3) Hippies - prairie dresses, suede and middle eastern inspired clothing trends
Hats
Again, the expert that we defer to is Isabella Josie Millinery!
Broadly, the three types of hats were newsboy hats (made popular by the 'Mod' movement), berets continued to be popular and wide-brimmed hats matched the relaxed and carefree style of the decade.
Sunglasses
Sunglasses were really popular and, with the introduction of new manufacturing processes, became even more varied!
The three types were
- oversized (as worn by Jackie Kennedy!)
- round (as seen on John Lennon)
- tinted lenses - making use of new manufacturing technology and incorporating a playful sense of style
Jewellery
Pearls were being replaced with bright, bold colours and plastic jewellery, as featured by Mary Quant (who made the mini skirt popular). Think pop art jewellery and new materials!
Wood also became a popular medium, especially with hippies! Beads, peace and love symbols are all featured!
Chunky bracelets were also in fashion.
Handbags
Whilst 'make do and mend' was fading, people still didn't let go of good quality items, so boxy handbags with short handles stayed during this decade. However, mini-bags started to become popular, especially in bright colours or new fabrics. Additionally, fringe bags were popular with the hippie movement, with long suede fringe.
Scarves and Headbands
Scarves continued to be popular but would be tied around the neck or the hair. The patterns became more bold and psychedelic!
Hair bows were used a the start of the decade to add a feminine touch to outfits.
Hair bands and tiaras took off around the latter half of the decade, with flower crowns adding to the carefree lifestyle and 'flower power' trend.
Hair clips, especially bright or sparkly ones, added to bouffant or beehive-styled hair were popular.
Shoes
With the new manufacturing techniques and new fabrics available, new shoes became popular!
White knee high go go boots, paired with a mini skirt were an icon of the decade!
Mary Jane shoes also came into fashion, paired with mini skirts.
Later in the decade, chunky heels were more popular, demonstrating more daring styles.
Tights
Coloured tights came into fashion, with vibrant colours and patterns paired with mini-skirts. Fishnet tights started to come into fashion later in the decade.
Belts
Wide belts and chain belts were popular! PVC belts in matching or clashing colours were added to outfits.
